About NORC

The NORC Library maintains a comprehensive collection of monographic and periodical literature in survey research methodology and history, as well as selected literature on statistics, education, health care administration, public health, demography, program evaluation, and U.S. and international census and vital statistics.

The wide range of resources of the University of Chicago Libraries are available to NORC through its affiliation with the University of Chicago Libraries. NORC staff may, through both its library and all NORC networked workstations, make full use of a large and growing number specialized online resources that the University of Chicago Libraries provide to their patrons, as well as interlibrary loan, document delivery, and other special library services. Availability of one of the world’s preeminent research collections, through the University of Chicago Libraries, allows NORC to concentrate its own library resources on the acquisition of highly specialized materials that directly support current NORC research.

For information about the holdings of the NORC Library, please consult the Library's web catalog. Although the Library's collection circulates only to NORC and affiliated research center faculty and staff, the Library is open to the public Monday through Friday between 8:15 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and the collection may be consulted onsite during those hours. The Library welcomes requests for information from the public, and seeks to make available whenever possible materials held uniquely by the Library as well as materials directly related to or resulting studies conducted by the NORC. Inquiries concerning unique holdings of the NORC Library or research conducted by NORC may be submitted by email to norcinfo@norcmail.uchicago.edu, or by U.S. mail to the Library.

The Library will send a single copy of any NORC or GSS working paper at no charge, upon request. Additional copies will be made available at cost. Please submit requests for NORC or GSS working papers by either email to norcinfo@norcmail.uchicago.edu, or by U.S. mail to the Library.

For questions which result in making photocopies for a patron, the Library charges $10, plus the cost of the copying. The fee is exclusively for the service of providing a reproduction, is established on the basis of no profit to the Library. The Library undertakes to uphold the Copyright Laws of 1976 without exception, and as outlined by the University of Chicago Library Reserve photocopying guidelines. The Library will fill requests for single copies of one article or a small part of a copyrighted work with the understanding that the request fills conditions of "fair use" specified in the law (Title 17, U. S. Code), and that the reproduction not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." The Library is obligated to refuse a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment would involve violation of copyright law.
